1. Is it worth it?
2. Would you please post The Professor’s guide?

In my experience, it is worth it only if you live in a place where poppers are illegal or otherwise unavailable. It will cost you more to make them at home, and unless you have a chemistry lab in your backyard, you will not achieve the same results as someone who runs even a small lab. I do it every now and then at home, but if I moved somewhere where I could just run to a local sex shop and buy them, I for sure would not bother making my own.

Thank you for the response. My objective would be product superior to that commercially available in the US. It sounds like this pursuit would be ill-advised.

@poon, did you catch my reply in "Top 3 poppers"?
It really doesn't take a large investment to try out making your own. You don't even strictly need glassware or a stir plate, just 3 items. IMHO it's far more economical than buying. Depending on your location, a $15 bottle of alcohol, $20 jar of salt, and $20 bottle of drain cleaner can produce 56 20ml bottles, with enough reagents left over to synthesize another 5+ bottles of alcohol. Large scale manufacturing, starting a business, and keeping customers happy is a different story. How much chemistry experience do you have?

@Dr. Wang, I have a BS in chemistry but have not worked in that field for a decade. Cost is not a major concern and I would only be making for myself.

I am in the US. I believe sourcing sodium nitrite has become increasingly difficult.

Commercial product is readily available but I am dissatisfied with the quality. I am most interested in isobutyl nitrite.

Many have wondered what happened to The Professor, Poon. He was a regular, and answered a lot of question from those of us with no chemical knowledge. I thought there was a link somewhere on here to his guide?

What is it about IBN that you prefer? it gives (gave actually, as it is no longer around) me a cough.

Poon said on Sat, 7 Dec 2024 at 19:46...

@PJ, I did find a link to the Professor’s guide but it is no longer functional.

I prefer IBN because amyl/pentyl, for me, provides little “rush.” I have had better experiences with isopropyl but value my eyesight.

Nonetheless I have yet to find a commercial IBN which does not yield undesirable side effects which sometimes include a cough. I have also been unable to find an IBN that gives the same euphoria that I experienced around 2005.

I am uncertain whether homemade IBN would prove superior in either regard. I have some doubts since there seems to be considerable unfulfilled demand for such a product.

Shit, sorry about that, I tried to use italics.

@Poon
That's great man, I would love to have a better grasp of chemistry. I'm self taught and there are hard limits to my ability, but I try (I've made carbon tetrachloride via UV photolysis using a car headlight, you can find a video of it on YouTube if you're so inclined). You can still find "Pro-Cure" sodium nitrite in the US from a bait supplier. It's listed as 99% technical grade.

Nomenclature in the poppers world is already questionable, but there are 8 isomers whose products would classify as genuine amyl nitrite. Factor in the non-IUPAC names, and I have a hard time even keeping track of what I have in my inventory. GPT says 3-methyl-butan-1-ol was the most common in the 70's. Butyl could be made from 2-methylpropan-1-ol, maybe others.

So far I've used 3-methyl-butan-1-ol, 2-methylpropan-1-ol, butan-1-ol, and isopropyl, and found none to compare to 1-pentanol in intensity and longevity, which peaks for 30 seconds and lasts 2 minutes per hit. When I hit them side by side to compare, the others feel like air.

I have other isomers on the way, among them 2-methylbutan-2-ol (2M2B, which I intend to try staight up too) and I'll post about my findings once I've tried all 7+ chems I intend to try.

If you do decide to give it a go, and I think it's worthwhile just as a side-hobby (and I'd personally like to hear your comparison to commercial products, with which I have no real experience), I'd definitely skip the butyl and start with 1-pentanol.

Sorry, Dr. Wang. One more thing that needs a fix.

Dr. Wang said on Mon, 9 Dec 2024 at 00:04...

No troubles Mam, thanks for deleting the other one.

@Dr. Wang, thank you for pointing me in the direction of Bait Cure.
