So I’m fully aware that poppers are not the same now as they were back in the 70’s. Now they’re ALL shit. I totally get it! However…putting all that aside. What’s the best of the shit now? .
What’s your top 3 now?

I boycott but in the US I would consider the following manufacturers:
Artisanal Cleaners, Golden Cock Poppers, PoppersX, VH Cleaners.

I think Pig Sweat is the best I've seen different looking bottles of the same name with yellow branding which is strange. The one that I buy is the one with the old style screw on top.You can just keep huffing it it's quite strong but smooth.
Also English in the big bottle is decent and strong. The problem is that they all go off very quickly
I'm uk based

I startedusing poppers many years ago when they really gave you a buzz, but now they really are shit. I must have spent a fortune try to get that same hit as years ago. I've even made my own, which were mostly successful, but now I can't buy the chemicals needed for that. I'm in the UK, and our government wants to control everything. It's almost as if they don't want people to have fun anymore.

Would you please expand upon “mostly successful?” I hesitate to begin making because, based on what is commercially available, no one seems to be having much success. I have some training but would similarly struggle with reagent sourcing.
Recently someone proposed that the past euphoria might be attributable to an unidentified component. Does this seem plausible?

locoman - My understanding was that nitrates are much more difficult to get than nitrites, which are easier to obtain now in the UK than the US? You might check out bait cure, as that's currently the easiest way to obtain sodium nitrite in the US. There are numerous lab synths, but they all use nitrate as a starting point.
Poon - Are you outside the US? I've been making my own real "amyl" from 1-pentanol for a couple years now. If you can't find the alcohol, you can often find the acetate and hydrolyze it, as there's usually less restriction on "banana oil". I've also tried 3-methyl-1-butanol, 1-butanol, and isopropanol, but they really pale in comparison to 1-pentanol.
As to how well it works, my only point of reference with commercial product is one time about 20 years ago I bought a bottle from a head shop. I sat in the car and gave it a small sniff and felt like I was going to black out. It kind of scared me, so I put it aside and never touched it again.
Going from memory, I don't think my amyl works quite like the commercial products, but I've enjoyed it. The biggest problem I have is variation from batch to batch. I run the reaction in the freezer in sub-zero temps, have used HCL with the NaNO2 dissolved in water, I've used H2SO4 in anhydrous conditions, but I still get variations where batches are stronger/weaker, clearer/yellower, some batches actually make me go soft right away :~/ The reaction is supposed to go slowly, but some of the best batches I've had were the product of thermal runaway, with the whole reaction being a 10-second fizz (I do 7ml batches because of the variation and short shelf life). My product loses so much potency after 2 weeks in the freezer I make fresh batches often.
Regarding unidentified components, I believe many current formulations actually contain chloroethane, making them resemble the Carnival party drug "lança-perfume" and the experience more like huffing(?). If the liquid has a strong cooling effect on the skin, this may be an indication of dissolved chloroethane.
I am awaiting shipment of some more alcohols to try. The branched-chain alcohols are more volatile, and thus supposedly more powerful. Despite my lackluster experience with the branched 2-Methyl-1-propanol, I'm going to try it again with direct product, rather than hydrolyzing the acetate, though the best product I've had so far has been from 1-pentanol I hydrolyzed from banana oil.
