Assessing Popper Purity—Implications for the Regulation and Recreational Use of Alkyl Nitrites Published: 3 September 2024

Department of Anesthesiology, Perioperative and Pain Medicine, Stanford University School of Medicine, Palo Alto, CA 94304, USA

"In this study, nine common popper brands were analyzed using hydrogen-1 and carbon-13 nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy to assess the presence of impurities. Physical labels on all nine samples indicated the contents were “pure” isobutyl nitrite, despite contradictory online marketing in several cases"

"Spectral results showed isobutyl nitrite was present in all popper samples. However, there was evidence that various unlabeled compounds were also present in all samples"

"Nine different popper samples were legally purchased from a popular online distributor based in the United States. Though one distributor was used for sample purchasing, the specific brands being sold were available on other similar sites and in brick-and-mortar gas stations, sex shops, and smoke shops. At the time of purchase, a total of 24 different popper products were listed for sale, with online descriptions suggesting at least 4 unique alkyl nitrite species were available. The 9 study samples were chosen based on the popularity rating listed by the distributor (highest score, 5-star scale)"

Another recent study also "discovered" a new poppers related condition called POPPERS DERMATITIS (this from George Washington University); the very well known temporary inflammation caused by excessive use. But it is a discovery!...no, it is not, everyone familiar with the poppers scene knows about it. I will read that Popper Purity study later, but I am thinking it is much the same. Scientists in the US seem to have found a new cash cow; writing ground breaking papers about poppers. Last time that happened there was a massive USA clampdown, and the relatively harmless chemicals (volatile nitrites) got falsely accused of causing HIV cancers, wasting money and time, do not trust all scientists.

I will trust a published scientist before an internet random who can’t even be bothered to read the paper.

I have something better to do right now. Like Wait Wait... Don't Tell Me.
You believe in poppers dermatitis? and that popper manufacturers are mislabeling impure adulterated isobutyl as amyl nitrate in an attempt to dupe US consumers? aw...come on, bro. Yeah I scanned it...

Yes. Fuck Trump.

I think you are talking about 47th President, bro. Its gonna happen because there are like loads of folks who will not admit their intentions to vote for him...so it is not neck and neck. Suck it up, it's gonna be a bumpy ride. But you believe in poppers dermatitis, so maybe you know better.

I mean, we need to really study more about the neg. effects cause it's an inhalant and it can cause bad health effects. Ex. me when i was doing it every day with grindr hook ups; my B12 was gone basically, was super depressed and I can barely think a thought without being a complete idiot. I was not cute.
Point is we need to the neg. to better treat each other or else you'll be very brain dead like me.

I agree that the hazards are understated. The slide in quality also warrants additional research. A GC/MS study would be valuable.

Recently a forum user proposed that formulas had changed. This paper confirms that isobutyl nitrite is still present.

Rimjob said on Tue, 22 Oct 2024 at 12:51...

is still present...present in what??? these Einsteins ordered from ONE, yeah ONE retailer!

"Though one distributor was used for sample purchasing, the
specific brands being sold were available on other similar sites and in brick-and-mortar gas stations, sex shops, and smoke shops"

bullshit!!!!, that one retailer can be selling only CHINA made shit, those "similar sites" could be getting from somewhere complete different....it says RUSH on the label lol so what? it is all copied, so it means NOTHING.

>isobutyl nitrite is still present....along with a LOT of other junk probably as a result of using waste byproduct chemicals as the base....in CHINA!

You believe the domestic-produced product has a different inactive ingredient?

I agree additional studies, including samples from other sources, would be helpful.

Kip said on Tue, 22 Oct 2024 at 12:56...

Correction: I meant to say active ingredient.

Where would you recommend purchasing authentic product?

You don't sound brain dead to me, EmeraldChick. Y'all are using a chemical name of isobutyl that is not meant to be used like that. Amyl nitrate, that is used by medical folks, they don't use isobutyl for a reason!
