As long as I’ve been doing poppers, I’ve never quite understood the purpose of the pellet. Can someone enlighten me please?

Actually NSpecialist should be able to inform you of the science on this one. As I remember it is supposed to keep the poppers fresh, it breaks down into little bits, and is a desiccant (if that is the right word) some are made of plastic and described as agitators.

The original power pellet was a plastic substrate that dissolved in the poppers; useless. At some point they switched to activated alumina (AA Looks white, and is light, like plastic, but is actually made from powdered aluminum)."

"ONE ball of AA isn't enough; the first time the bottle is opened, and atmospheric water vapor enters the bottle, the ball is overwhelmed. Aliquoting from a parent container into an 'in use' container slows degradation from water and oxygen"

Simple short answer....the ball sucks up water that will destroy the popper.

Drying and removing acid is important BUT the single most important factor in making good poppers is the PURITY of the alcohol. Alcohols degrade much faster than sodium nitrite does...especially once they are opened.

Impure alcohols add impurities that cause all sorts of off effects and odors. N amyl nitrite should smell fruity, be non stinging to the skin and can have a pleasant, menthol like aroma when deeply inhaled.

Moreover, buying alcohols off Amazon or Ebay is a very BAD idea. Nobody knows how they have been stored or how old they are...hence, the purity is always in question.
