Let's be honest. Commercial poppers are shit. They don't care about us. They never answer emails about the chemistry, which is a legit requirement in NZ and Oz Where REAL poppers are legal three years, but since then all the shit has been banned from import because... It's not REAL poppers. I've tried writing to legit chemistry companies they sell by the litre, but they too don't answer emails.
Our balls are in a bucket, boys. It's time we made and traded right here.
Surely the site owner could get behind that for a little percentage?
Wishing you all Peace and (real) Poppers.

They sell pure nitrite without alcohol and diphenylamine on auction portals, but pure nitrite breaks down quickly. Therefore, manufacturers add fixers such as diphenylamine to keep the product fresh and retain its properties for a longer period of time.
Better stay with experienced companies that have been doing this for many years, or if you have distillation equipment to clean the product do it yourself.

Factory made nitrites, from Sigma Aldrich, Alfa Asar, and Tokyo Chemical are also not fit to inhale. It's not because they are so impure, they are not. They are tested and come with COA's. It's because they possess trace impurities that make them less fun and more toxic. Isopentyl nitrite, in particular, degrades even once bottled. It stinks(funky/bad) when it does, but is not particularly toxic compared to butyl and isobutyl.

It is relatively easy to make small quantities of nitrites, following William Noyes(published and peer reviewed chemist from 1930s). But scaling up would be difficult.

Anonymous mentioning diphenylamine.

Diphenylamine is highly appealing, and can be used to neutralize excess acid in a preparation.
Unfortunately, poppers (Alkyl nitrites) don't respond very well to it, it actually encourages decomposition.
I'm away right now, but they're is a PDF regarding stabilization of Alkyl nitrites. The one that mentions potassium carbonate as the best stabilizer also mentions prior attempts. The Original idea was that if acids hasten decomposition maybe bases (like diphenylamine and triphenylamine) would stabilizer it. That turned out not to be the case, and slightly alkali metals salts priced to be a superior stabilizer.

@The Professor: Thanks very much for your informative response regarding the stabilization of Alkyl Nitrites.

@Peter....you can find all that information by simply Googling it. It's been online for over a decade.

Yes...there's William Noyes formula that's easy to Google....and the known preservatives are easy to Google as well. There's a well known 1958 patent that goes into detail.

What's weird is that virtually all the Youtube videos that show how to make alkyl nitrites use HCl as the acid. They all use a simple mag stirrer too. I'll bet they don't realize that sulfuric acid makes a better popper. The only advantage to using HCl...and this isn't really a good advantage since it produces a worse product more easily....is that it doesn't create crystals that are hard to stir. In this day and age, ease is more important than quality. With poppers...quality should be more important.

And all the lies above are explained in the other thread here, I'm not going to waste time responding to Ken's madness a(and his game of 'rope-a-dope' is destroying his credibility)

Ken's still playing with his imaginary friends

readers that are new to this forum probably haven't experienced the lying, deceitful, willful ignorance that is Ken (aka brewmeister, aka anonymous, aka popperass, aka madeplentypoppers, aka NitriteSpecialist aka PopperExpert, aka PopperMaker, aka kenjoneslee, aka John Mulligan, etc.

He'll fight his wrong ideas to the ground, hasn't attained control of this reaction 13 years, and is wasting everyone's time.

another big yawn with no new content, a dollop of lies, with a dash of baloney

For a novice, never chemist, layman, yet good at following direction, is this doable for me in a typical US city?

This ongoing saga going on across multiple threads between Ken and The Professor is bordering on pathetic. Maybe this Ken guy is full of it and everything you say I don’t know or care tbh, but the other guy doesn’t have the self awareness to see that he is just as bad by crusading every thread, he is doing the exact same thing he’s accusing the other guy of :’) if you two hate each other so much, stop talking to each other and move on, or arrange a Motel somewhere and work out all this tension!
