I purchased some poppers from AC, put them on cotton wool in a plastic bag.
After a couple of minutes, the bag was full of brown fumes/gas.

The lights were off, so I didn't realize until I had taken a couple of hits [although the taste/smell was bad, I thought it was just AC poppers]

What would cause this and how bad is taking a hit of them?

Their stuff is super duper nitrosaturated. Next time don't put in a container with that much air space. The oxygen in the air will mix with the nitrite to make NO2. Also NEVER EVER use plastic. Most of their products are strong enough straight from the bottle. If you must over indulgence, put a few drops on a sock and roll it up then place it between your teeth and suck on it. The NO2 in large amounts is really bad but a couple of whiffs you'll live. Never mistake the real thing for the crap that is available OTC then most likely came from Crap'hina.
