Is this a new message, or what they've been saying all along?

Looks new, Billy.

It is also being reported in Forbes magazine....methemoglobinemia! Strange isn't it...why now? Nothing to do with weird new formulas coming from China containing iso-propyl nitrite of course!

R. Don said on Fri, 9 Jul 2021 at 09:11...

It's iso propyl they should be warning us about. The EU changed the formula in 2007 from iso butyl nitrite to iso propyl without any warning.

Billy said on Fri, 9 Jul 2021 at 09:46...

FDA is in America so it's about isobutyl, banned in the EU because of the cancer risk.

R. Don said on Fri, 9 Jul 2021 at 10:40...

That's right. The EU carried out experiments on rats, forcing them to inhale iso butyl nitrite for 48 hours until one of them died declaring it a carcinogenic.

The warning doesn't contain enough information...for example which types of poppers were most dangerous and who was making/selling them. Of course, they are deadly if you drink them. One gram of sodium nitrite can kill a person via anemia/low blood pressure. But people inhale them, not drink them.

I have long doubted that the many poppers I bought OTC and online, circa 2008-10, in the USA, were NOT isobutyl nitrite because IBN always caves my blood pressure and none of the poppers I bought then did so. Plus, IBN smells strong and very distinctly like nail polish compounds...very sweet nail polish compound. It's not a very pleasant odor and I don't remember anything OTC smelling like it in 2008-10. IBN caves my blood pressure as well, just not as fast as IPN. Butyl nitrite smells very sweet too, but nothing like nail polish remover...It's more like fruit/banana. I also don't remember that odor. And it wasn't isopropyl because IPN caves my blood pressure each and every time 100% of the time.

So...what nitrite has the least odor and least tendency to cave the blood pressure??? The only way USA poppers I bought in 2009 could have been IBN or BN...is if they were cut with some inert diluent without a distinctive odor.

Regarding isoamyl/isopentyl nitrite: It smells mildly fruity UNLESS it's degraded...then it can smell like funky nasty feet, dirty socks or dead fish. Normal amyl nitrite is more stable and won't degrade into some wretched odor as quickly.

Also, BUTYL NITRITE is easy to identify, because when it's left open in a room, it gives the room a VERY VERY distinct odor of a Locker Room; hence, the first brand name.

Nitritespecialist said on Fri, 9 Jul 2021 at 13:19...

What I mean by "locker room odor" is not nasty dirty socks or jocks, but a locker room that has been cleaned. BN gives a room a "clean" locker room odor.

I think we can assume the FDA are recommending against any and all nitrites. They don't need to specify a particular manufacturer or type, none of it is good for you.

This is an interesting read:

Ethanol is far FAR worse than poppers and yet it's perfectly legal. I read one large study that said even small amounts of ethanol seemed to have ill effects long term. We all know how the FEDS failed when they criminalized ethanol. They were up against a strong, long standing social habit; whereas with amyl nitrite of the 1960s, it was just a tiny percentage of gay guys and/or sexually adventurous straights that were hitting amyl. So much easier to crack down on all their fun(alleged abuse).

@Billy seems you've made your mind up on the use of poppers

Canuck SB said on Fri, 9 Jul 2021 at 21:42...

@Billy we are adults able to make our own decisions and research!

Billy said on Fri, 9 Jul 2021 at 22:09...

Well, I'm always in two minds :-). Have been using poppers heavily this past 24 hours.

Billy said on Fri, 9 Jul 2021 at 22:10...

Didn't use them in 3 years and recently started again. First experience a dead loss, dodgy Chinese IPN. Next time more successful, IBN, but yes feel urge to use every day, and worried about permanently reducing oxygen in my blood.

@Billy have you tried the wim hoff method?check it out on youtube theres a bunch of videos with on screen timers and audio instruction try it out definitely helps with anxiety!!!!

The poppers I was buying, circa 2008-10, in the USA, from PictureBrite.com, the local adult store, gay clubs, and a few other online sites ALL were similar. Over those 2 years, I bought from at least 5 different vendors and the poppers were so similar I never noticed much difference. NONE smelled acidic or caused airway/nostril irritation. NONE had a prominent, memorable odor that could easily be recognized as a particular type of popper. NONE made me feel tired or caused any type of unpleasant effect. The pleasant effects had a range....from feeling dreamy/receptive to feeling animalistic slutty. ALL relaxed the ass. All of them lost potency within hours of opening. I don't remember any strong foul odors once potency was lost. After Joe Miller died, I never was able to buy anymore poppers with any of these traits.

Nitritespecialist said on Sat, 10 Jul 2021 at 14:37...

All the bottles audibly released gas upon first opening. As the poppers lost potency, I noticed a slight tingling in the nostrils as if sniffing a carbonated, slightly acidic beverage. Sometimes, my nostril became stuffy when this happened, but never painful, never mucous.

R. Don said on Sat, 10 Jul 2021 at 14:59...

I well remember the audible release of gas on first opening. The first sniff would induce a strong pulse in the head followed by rapid heartbeat, and then a smooth warm long lasting rush to the head. Maybe Joe's secret formula has gone forever ?

The Professor said on Sat, 10 Jul 2021 at 18:59...

@R. Don

to get the 'pop' (hissing release of Nitric Oxide) that exands your lungs and brings a grin, you have to start with a truly nitrosated product. That's a super-saturated condition, and the NO is precipitating out of solution and into the air.

Much like a carbonated beverage (but NO bubbles are much smaller than CO2 bubbles), this only happens a couple of times, then the product 'goes flat'

Sadly, you are correct, I have yet to see a commercial vendor's product effervesce like that.

My own product DOES effervesce, and I'm betting that many other makers out there are having success. It's not an intractable problem to create a nitrite that is both highly potent and pleasant to inhale. It just takes a little bit of critical thinking.

Just read this link from Billy:

https://academic.oup.com/omcr/article/2021/2/omaa136/6136156

The idiot drank a bottle, and then went back to the adult store and bought another one as he didn't get any effects! Ended up in hospital lol

Billy said on Sun, 11 Jul 2021 at 12:27...

Wait, so you're saying this is wrong?

Nitritespecialist said on Mon, 12 Jul 2021 at 00:11...

@R. Don...I read an old drug journal that said adding CO2 to nitrites helped make side effects less. I don't know if Joe Miller was doing this or not....but it sounds plausible.

R. Don said on Mon, 12 Jul 2021 at 10:30...

Nitritespecialist: When I first discovered poppers in 1994 the after effects were minimal, a headache yes, but that was it. I'm sure Joe's formula was in UK poppers, it's never been the same since 2007.

Nitritespecialist said on Tue, 13 Jul 2021 at 12:47...

@R.Don...I didn't even know who Joseph Miller was until he died and I couldn't get good poppers anymore. The obit said he was the world's largest supplier of poppers...so I don't doubt the poppers you were buying in the UK were his product. Joe started his business right at the beginning when the opportunity was greatest and easiest. He lived in Indianapolis, right where Eli Lilly made amyl nitrite. He saw a business opportunity and he jumped on it. I have to wonder if he ever felt responsible for the AIDS epidemic....making it worse than it may have been. I know if I had been into poppers in the 80s in Houston, I'd be dead now. But here I am...all these years later and I'm NEG because I was not into poppers in my prime.

Rush said on Sun, 18 Jul 2021 at 18:41...

"Joe started his business right at the beginning"

Wrong.

"He saw a business opportunity and he jumped on it."

Wrong again.

"I have to wonder if he ever felt responsible for the AIDS epidemic.."

WTF are you talking about?

"I didn't even know who Joseph Miller was"

Then why are you talking about him? Shut the fuck up.
