There is much confusion about the various chemical names of popper compounds.

Here's what we should know: All chemical compounds have multiple chemical synonyms. So it's important to know what those synonyms because it can get confusing.

ISO-mers are molecules of compounds that are just arranged differently and therefore have different properties, even though they are essentially the same chemical.

So...normal butyl nitrite and isobutyl nitrite are the same compound, but the isobutyl nitrite molecule is arranged differently from the butyl one. This creates different properties...different odor...slightly different effects.

Amyl has more isomers than butyl, but the primary one used for poppers is simply, isoamyl nitrite which is a synonym for isopentyl nitrite. Normal amyl nitrite or n-amyl nitrite is exactly the same as pentyl nitrite. Notice how neither has the ISOmer prefix. Isopentyl and isoamyl are likewise the exact same compound having the same molecular arrangements. They are merely synonyms.

Any popper formula could have a variety of different nitrites and isomers in them. You could have both n-amyl(pentyl) nitrite and isoamyl(isopentyl) nitrite both mixed. When nitrites were first made for medicinal use, they were typically not pure and contained a number of isomers and base nitrites. For example, a bottle of nitrile of amyl could easily contain both amyl and butyl nitrites as well as their isomer cousins. All these different components were discovered eventually and once the base alcohols were available in pure forms, it became more possible to make a single type of popper.

I'm in the UK where only Iso Propyl Nitrite poppers are legal.(horrible stuff)

Jako...I am not sure if I tried OTC isopropyl nitrite, but everything I have made is very toxic and sure to knock me on my butt in less than 20 minutes. The low blood pressure becomes overwhelming and I succumb to it.
