Hi,

I am a 29 year old male. Been using poppers for over 3 years now. I’ve had acid reflux even before that but I feel like my symptoms have worsened over the last couple of years.
I remember reading somewhere that the lower esophageal sphincter which prevents acid from refluxing up into the esophagus is entirely composed of smooth muscles. Since poppers relax smooth muscles all over the body, I am wondering now if continuous usage had weakened my sphincter, which explains the increase in reflux symptoms. Has anyone else experienced the same?

Thanks!

Temporarily relax, Vaikai. I do not think this is linked to poppers.

Vaikai - My use of poppers has increased a lot lately and it seems now that my acid reflux has gotten way worse.

Did you stop using poppers and if so, did your acid reflux go away?

Poppers relax smooth muscles, which includes the stomach sphincter.

So, yes.

I suspect it does. I’ve used it off and on for the past four years. Not on a regular basis. Recently my acid reflux and GERD has increased the past several weeks and so has the usage of poppers. After a 10 days of using Prilosec and watching my diet, it still was there. Just now, I realized the poppers may be the “culprit”. I Googled acid reflux and poppers and was taken to this thread. I’m going to quit and see. I mean for me, it’s an easy thing to give up if it’s going to cause that type of harm to my body.

I sometimes use Cialis, and it is documented to cause reflux. I notice the connection all the time when I’ve taken a dose.

So I just noticed that the same thing happens with poppers, I should realized that the both relax smooth muscle and increase blood flow.

So, from both scientific logic and personal experience, I can tell you that poppers CAN exacerbate reflux.

I also use Cialis and poppers. Never had GERD until after the use of these substances. Started poppers about 2 years ago, Cialis for a year.

I am 43 and otherwise healthy.

I too have used poppers and viagra for the past few years, 3 plus to be exact and I too have developed GERD. I now get hiccups so bad for no reason for days on end. Hopefully taking a break and getting on right meds this will get better.

Defo. Poppers have been directly related to my GERD rebounds. Sad to part ways with those dear, ol’ amber bottles, but the temporary fun is not worth the agony.

poppers is a bitch to quit, but if it means giving it up b/c reflux symptoms are getting worse, then the bottles are going to go in the trash...
