Last weekend I had to replace a wooden floorboard. Using a microfiber roller, I stained and varnished it in a small room with the window open. I'd done this previously in a much bigger room. Then I washed the roller in the sink, putting my hands into it to try to squeeze out the varnish, thinking I could reuse it.

I soon felt pretty sick and I was very aware of the fumes coming out of the can when I had the lid off the can. I felt sick for a couple of days with my lungs feeling coated in varnish and me generally feeling lethargic and spaced-out. I also had the feeling of my dick disappearing that happens with poppers, but not in a good way!

I looked at the label on the can which I hadn't paid attention to before. It says it contains "n butyl acetate. Ethanol isopropanol / Methoxy proponal."

I don't plan on using it again unless I'm in the garden!

But it just made me think, sometimes people charactericise poppers as being solvents. But they are not, are they? Whereas something like this varnish actually is a solvent, and you'd have to be mad to use it as a drug of abuse because the negative side-effects even using it for its proper purpose come on quickly.

Then secondly, tell me, this stuff is chemically totally unrelated to poppers? Or in some way similar but not washed out etc? I just notice the 'n-butyl' in both.

Thanks!

Solvents in this context are organic solvents. If you start with some nasty, viscous mess and your liquid dissolves it, you have a solvent. Organic chemistry basically deals with carbon-based molecules, and most of what you encounter has an oxygen and/or hydrogen and/or some functional group attached.

I would liken your experience to gasoline vs. kerosene. The former is a solvent, and the latter is an oily solvent. Either would give you the same nasty effects if you huffed them.

When you get poppers these days, you are getting something that isn't even an alkyl nitrite since you are dealing with a black/gray market and no one knows how to make them anymore. It's as simple as getting a pure nitrite salt and distilling the product, but no one can figure that out. If you buy something online these days, you are certainly NOT getting real poppers, and whatever you get is garbage that isn't even close. There is a PDF floating around the Internets from around 1999 where some grad student or nonprofit do-gooder makes poppers with H2SO4 and NaNO2 and some alcohol by just shaking it all and keeping it cold and in the dark for about two hours. The GC analysis shows a good spike of alcohol, a good spike of alkyl nitrite, and a few smaller spikes of the various junk that results from the reaction. If you find the paper, it goes in depth about what that junk was.

The only thing that Ken (Super Ultra Popper Nitrite Expert Specialist) is telling the truth about is that you haven't been able to get good alkyl nitrites since around the time that Joe Miller offed himself. SUPPOSEDLY that was 2010, but there was some good stuff around up until 2012. I haven't seen good butyl/isobutyl in a decade now. Whoever had the recipe, equipment, or good ingredients has long since moved on.

Stuff today, at least legit USA product, is very similar or the same as what PWD produced for decades....Isobutyl Nitrite. The guys doing USA product now have been in business for more than a couple of decades, most since at least 1995. Joe's 1978 handwritten recipe that he purchased does exist to this day on the original yellow pad paper it was scribbled on. He bought it in 1978 from the original Pac West owner in CA after a fire destroyed his place. Joe was actually the second owner, but is the guy that made PWD and Rush into a worldwide #1 product.

I don't entirely understand how this thread has become about Joe Miller!!!

I found Marcia's coke stash, Mrs. Brady! But I'll say I'm surprised to say there were no poppers in there. Uhm hum! I found a whole box of ampuoles and a rubber dildo in Mr. Brady's dopp kit though. Are you playing a prank on Mr. Brady, Mrs. Brady?
