It's apparent that super cold temperatures are critical for DIY poppers. Someone has mentioned the use of dry ice which is -109F or -70C. Someone else has mentioned -12C. The literature mentions 32F or 0C. Whatever the exact optimum temperature may be or whatever mixing method is used, it seems like the colder the better. I am not a chemist, so it's not clear to me why cold temps are better except that some have said that nitrous acid formation is more stable when it's cold. And this means the nitrous acid is more likely to combine with the alcohol before it decomposes or turns into something else - when it's cold enough, long enough.
