Vogel's says to let amyl nitrite sit in reaction pot awhile before harvesting. I have found that sometimes it's better to mix as quickly as possible, at cold temps, and harvest ASAP. I started getting a weak, off smelling popper by mixing very slowly and waiting to harvest. This might be due to my sodium nitrite being somewhat degraded.
When I increased addition speed and harvested right away, I got a much improved amyl - everything else was equal.
